Five Tips to Avoid Truck Accidents

It’s very tricky when sharing the road with truck drivers, especially in heavy traffic. Due to their significant size and power, they can be very dangerous. The collision between a small car and a truck is usually catastrophic.

Therefore, if you or a loved one gets injured in such an accident, you need to contact a truck accident lawyer. The lawyer will be familiar with the disastrous effects of truck accidents and will evaluate your case. Truck accident lawyers will also help you get medical compensation in cases where you’ve suffered spinal cord injuries, paralysis, amputations, and other types of injuries.

How to Avoid Car Accidents

More than 200,000 collision accidents between a small vehicle and a truck happen each year. To reduce this number of casualties, here are some tips you can follow:

1. Avoid Blind Spots

Give ample room to trucks when they are making turns. Trucks have more and larger blind spots than other automobiles due to their size. Therefore, you should stay out of certain areas since its difficult for truck drivers to see, including the following:

  • 20 to 30 feet in front of and behind the truck
  • Two lanes apart, on the right side of the truck
  • The lane that is equal to half of the trailer’s length on the driver’s side

If you cannot see the driver in the truck’s side mirrors, the truck driver can’t see you, either.

2. Avoid Distractions

A significant cause of accidents is distractions on the road. Avoid activities that will take your eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel. Things like phones, newspapers, noisy passengers and food take your attention off the road and pave the way for an accident. Arrive at your destination first; then, you can read and respond to your text messages.

3. Keep Distance Between You and the Truck

Don’t be near or beside a truck for too long. Driving too close to a truck puts you at an increased risk of getting an accident caused by a number of factors:

  • Sudden braking
  • Strong winds that cause a rollover
  • Blowing out a tire

You should ensure you give space to the truck:

  • Maintain a following distance of about four seconds behind the truck
  • Give a turning truck plenty of space over about two lanes
  • Don’t overtake a right-turning truck on its right. You could be trapped between the front and rear wheels of the truck

4. Wait for the Right Time to Pass

It’s different passing a truck compared to a regular automobile. Trucks don’t stop or maneuver as quickly as other vehicles. They need time to adjust and react to speed. Maintain a constant speed while overtaking the truck; don’t just pull up in front of it. Also, please do not attempt to pass them around curves.

You should also keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid passing a truck uphill or downhill. Trucks naturally increase or decrease speed.
  • Approach the truck you plan on overtaking on the left. It’s easier for the driver to see you.
  • Until you see the driver clearly in your rear-view mirror, don’t merge back into the lane in front of the car.
  • If a truck overtakes you, slow down and stay on the right

5. Use Your Turn Signals

It’s essential to provide clear signals for the truck driver so that he or she can anticipate your actions. Use these signals sooner than you’d do with other vehicles so that the truck drivers can adjust their driving in ample time. A sudden lane change denies the truck time to avoid a collision.

Your Safety Should Be a Priority

The basic rule on the road is to be respectful of other drivers. Following these tips will make it safer and easier for you to navigate roads since collisions with trucks cause severe injuries and sometimes death. Be cautious on the road, as anything can happen within a split second.
